Week 10 Deep Pantry /Food Storage Challenge

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

A deep pantry a good thing to have.

Don’t forget to share what you were able to do this past week to have a deep pantry/food storage. Let’s encourage each other. And if you have a question feel free to ask or if you have the answer to a question feel free to answer. If you have a tip or idea you can share that also. As I said let’s make this a place where we can share and encourage others to get that deep pantry.

50 pounds flour or wheat / 25 pounds oats

Flour or wheat, If you don’t have a grinder there is no point in getting wheat so get flour. Flour at Wal-Mart is 8.44 for 25 pounds. Whichever you get, flour or wheat, if any way possible freeze it for at least 48 hours this will kill all the little pest in the flour.  I store mine outside in a shed and it stays frozen all winter. I have some from 08 that is still good. If storing in the summer, put in the freezer for 48 hours before storing.  If you live in a warmer climate you will need to use oxygen absorbers, and put in Mylar bags.( Unless you get flour or wheat that is already in long term storage containers).

Oats, Wal-Mart has oats for 13.58 for 10 pounds or 1.68 for the 2 pounds 10 oz. containers, I get mine at IFA ( our local feed store) they have them for 30.00 for 50 pounds. When storing oats use the same methods as you would for flour or wheat.

Well I apparently wasn’t paying any attention to the date last week. I was supposed to do the new action item and extra item. So I will do that this week (Sorry It’s be kind of crazy around here lol).

So here it is.

The action item for this month is to learn C.P.R. and some 1st aid. A lot of fire departments and Red Cross centers will offer CPR and basic 1st aid classes for a small fee and sometimes for free.

The extra item this month is packs, we use our hunting packs for this and we take them where ever we go. Each one of us have our own. These would be the same thing as bug out bags. I will try to get a post up soon on what to put in them.

Add some more money to your money stash, even if it is a very small amount it all adds up in the end.

Put back some more water.

Continue planning your garden and getting it ready.

This week I didn’t get a lot done. I am trying to start a new business (more about this later) and have been working on that a lot.

So what were you able to get done this week?

I would be interested in learning more about a bug-out bag. I think I have what I need in mine but it’s just a guess!! I’ve kept an emergency pack since we had a small earthquake here in Indiana over 20 years ago. I carry it in my vehicle wherever I go. A bug-out bag has important papers, etc. in it, right? I really don’t know.

I bought some flour this past week, all purpose and self rising. I like to have self rising for certain things like biscuits and quick cobblers. I keep in a large glass canister on my countertop. I also have bread flour and whole wheat already. I usually do put all these in the freezer for a while. I also put my pasta in the freezer to kill critters. It happens that I just added another 2-liter coke bottle of water to my water supply this evening. I brought home the empty bottle from church last night after a fellowship meal. Thanks for all the tips….Vicky in Ky

Had never heard about freezing first! Found bugs in my Bisqick the other day – so if I frozen it first, that wouldn’t have happened? Somehow I couldn’t pass it off as pepper in the biscuits!

      Sue,
HaHa that would be some big pepper flakes 🙂 Yes if you can freeze at least 48 hours it kills all the little buggies.
      have a great day

Oh goodness – I’ve never put flour in my freezer either. I do store mine in the fridge, though. Does all flour have pests? Even if freezing did kill pests, if I saw them in there, I wouldn’t be able to use it. Ew.

Thanks for sharing these tips at Literacy Musing Mondays!

I’ve heard of the freezing tip, but don’t do it. 🙁 Thankfully I haven’t had problems yet, but I know it’s likely only a matter of time! Thanks for sharing on the #wastelesswednesday blog hop!

Ok, I have never heard of freezing these items before either. I know my parents used to put crackers… or something else in the flour and sugar to help with bugs.. (or at least I think that’s what they did :/ .. I will have to ask them lol ) I so wish we had a deep pantry – ever since moving to our new home, that is one thing we do not have, when we moved in a little over 2 years ago, it had almost no storage other than the kitchen – not even a linen closet… the house was not built for practical living – but the view is amazing …. 🙂

I so appreciate you linking up with me at #TuneInThursday and I look forward to having you join me in the weeks ahead!

I always store my flour in the freezer until I’m ready to use it. I was told by my grandmother the cold kills any weevils that might get in it. Thank you for sharing at Link It Up Wednesday!

I always buy flour by the 25 lb. bag. Have never had a problem. I store it in a large metal tin. Was busy this week and haven’t even made it to the store to add to my food storage. Thanks for sharing with SYC.
    hugs,
