Week 15 Deep Pantry Challenge & MYO Pudding

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

A deep pantry a good thing to have.

Remember having a deep pantry isnโ€™t just about having extra food on hand. It is also about having the means to survive in an emergency situation, having all the extra food isnโ€™t going to do you much good if you canโ€™t cook it when the power is out.

Donโ€™t forget to share what you were able to do this past week to have a deep pantry/food storage. Letโ€™s encourage each other. And if you have a question feel free to ask or if you have the answer to a question feel free to answer.ย If you have a tip or idea you can share that also. As I said letโ€™s make this a place where we can share and encourage othersย to get that deep pantry.

50 Pounds Beans/Gelatin, Pudding

50 pounds of beans, get the beans that your family will eat, just about the only thing my family eats is pintos so that is just about all I store. I do have a few black and kidney beans (just to have a little variety) Pinto Beans at Wal-Mart are 72 cents for a 15.8 oz bag or 13.42 for a 20 pound bag.

Gelatin, Wal-Mart has the small packs of Jello for 50 cents. You can also make your own with unflavored gelatin and fruit juice or Kool-Aid, You can get unflavored gelatin in bulk at Bulk foods .com.

Pudding, Wal-Mart has the small packs for 68 cents or once again you can make your own. You can also get Corn Starch at Bulk Foodsย

Basic Pudding Mix

  1. 8 cups Powder Milk
  2. 4 cups sugar
  3. 4 cups Corn Starch
  4. 1 teaspoon salt

Stir together all ingredients until well blended.ย  Store in a covered container. Attach a tag with mixing instructions.

For Pudding
1 Cup of mix
3 cups boiling water
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 Tablespoon Butter

Place one cup of the mix in a small saucepan.ย  Slowly add 3 cups of boiling water, stirring as you add the water.ย  Cook over medium heat for 3 to 5 minutes, stirring constantly, until the mixture is thickened. Add 1 tablespoon of butter at the end of the cooking time once the mixture has thickened.

For Chocolate Pudding
Add 3 tablespoons cocoa powder to the dry mix before cooking.
For Lemon
Omit vanilla and add 1 tablespoon lemon juice and 1 tablespoon lemon zest.
For Banana
Add 1 tablespoon Banana extract (when you add vanilla) and 1 cup sliced or mashed bananas to cooled pudding

Keep working on your alternate cooking sources. There are so many options from Solar, wonder oven, bbq grill, rocket stove, even on your wood stove if you have one, to name a few.

Have you learned anything about canning or found someone who can teach you?

Add some more to your water, buy some or fill your own containers.

Add more to your money stash. Remember it all adds up.

What I was able to get done this week

I got 8 bags of powder Sugar and 8 bags of brown sugar, several cans of tomato paste, frozen apple juice to make vinegar with, the water kefir grains, and natural yeast starter came in ( can’t wait to get these started), several seed starts replanted, a few cans of beef and chicken broth, Iย  got some herb seeds in that I had ordered. Iย also talked to someone I know who has a few sheep about getting some wool from them when they shear their sheep.(He said there should be about 100 pounds woo hoo)ย

So what were you able to get done this week?

You’ve got some great ideas to build up a usable pantry. I’m working on trying to get mine more stocked and ready. I’m linking up with #LMMLinkup. Welcome to you as a new host!

      Gayl,
Thanks, It is always so nice to have a stocked Pantry and know you are ready for anything. And thanks for linking up.
      Have a great day,
      Connie

Water is my biggest component in keeping stashed. The fruit season is upon us in another week or so and I’m gathering things to can and keep in the freezer. I made a trip to the farm today and got as much honey as I could because it can be used for a lot of different things. Thanks for all your help.

      Joani,
Water is also mine, it is the one thing that I always worry about. Can’t believe it is almost fruit season. I keep hoping my dandelions will wait 2 more weeks before they bloom so I can get ready for them, (want to do jelly, syrup and soap) I don’t think they are going to though. Hope all is well with you.
      Have a great day

Connie – I am really learning alot of “hacks” on how to make items from bulk staples.
This is awesome – I do have to say, I do have jello and pudding stockpiled in a cupboard in the garage… Thank you for linking up with #TuneInThursday today! I am so blessed to have you linking up your posts as part of the community.

How do you afford all this? It so discouraging. My husband brings home only $600/week. By the time we’ve paid all the bills, our cupboards and freezer are left nearly empty all the time.

      Christine,
Please don’t get discouraged that is the last thing I want when someone reads these. I know how hard it is to try to put back extra food on a tight budget. I am going to do a post in a few days and address this issue. And ways to help be able to do some of it.(this week or next). And if you someone else would like some one on one help I will be more than glad to do that, they can e-mail at frugallivingontheranch@yahoo.com
      Have a great day
