Week 23 Deep Pantry/Food Storage Challenge

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

“A prudent person foresees the danger ahead and takes precautions. The simpleton goes blindly on and suffers the consequences. Proverbs 27:12

A deep pantry a good thing to have.

Remember having a deep pantry isn’t just about having extra food on hand. It is also about having the means to survive in an emergency situation, having all the extra food isn’t going to do you much good if you can’t cook it when the power is out.

If you are having a hard time trying to afford filling a deep pantry, read my post on having a Deep Pantry on a tight budget.

Don’t forget to share what you were able to do this past week to have a deep pantry/food storage. Let’s encourage each other. And if you have a question feel free to ask or if you have the answer to a question feel free to answer. If you have a tip or idea you can share that also. As I said let’s make this a place where we can share and encourage others to get that deep pantry.

12 boxes of Mac and Cheese / Popcorn

Mac and Cheese get the brand that your family will eat. Mine have ate the store brand for so long they don’t like the name brand.

Wal-Mart has mac and cheese for 78 cents a box. Another option is if you have a good cheese powder that you like store that and extra macaroni. I have Mac & cheese stored that I bought on sale for 25 cents a box and it wasn’t that long ago. Just shows how you can save money by stocking up. This is something you need to freeze for a couple days before storing so it doesn’t get bugs, also store in tubs or buckets that rodents and other varmints can’t get into them.

Popcorn, this is nice to have just for a snack food. Learn how to cook this on the stove. This and the microwave are the only ways I cook popcorn, I think it taste way better cooked on the stove , but when in a hurry I will throw it in the microwave. You can also use it for caramel corn, or popcorn balls. You can also make your own spiced flavor to sprinkle on.

Are you finding your shut off valves and breakers, and learning how to close and shut off them? You never know when you may need to do this, like a huge water leak, being able to shut off the water at the main could save a lot of water damage and a large water bill.

Are you finding any games, puzzles, or books? Get a variety of games, puzzles, and books for all ages, from small children to adults. Even if you don’t have small children or teens at home now, there may be some in the future.

What was I able to get done this week?

I canned 20 half pints strawberry puree/syrup, bought several cans of tomato paste, several cans of coconut water, chipolata peppers, some sure jell, a couple # 10 cans of whole tomatoes, A gallon bag of meat balls made and put in the freezer. I think this is about it, I have been redoing the play area in the back yard for the kids and that has been taking most of my spare time.

What were you able to get done this week?

Have a great week.

Will be reading your blog but probably won’t be saying much for the next month or so. Working a lot of hours, plus just too much to do and my garden comes first!! Picked my first Italian Flat Green Beans this morning. Who knew!! I was really surprised, but the rain we had a couple days ago has stimulated major growth in our garden. Am busy canning beets, the rest of our turnips and freezing beet greens and Swiss Chard. For some unknown reason they have grown like crazy for me this year. Go figure! LOL!! Put our fencing up for the cucumbers and spaghetti squash. Am anxiously awaiting fresh tomatoes but so far just little green ones. Our red, white and blue potatoes are all blooming and all of our sweet potatoes slips made it. Looks like (keep your fingers crossed) it might be a good year for our garden. I surely do hope so!!! We have a family of foxes and they seem to be handling most of the critters in and around our garden. They’re cool as long as they don’t mess with my chickens!!

Trimmed my grape arbor back hard this year, trying to bring it back. Looks fairly good but don’t expect any grapes to speak of. Here in Indiana with all our wet, clay soil, grapes don’t do so well but I’m working on it! Won’t be long and the garlic will need digging. They are already starting to turn yellow and brown. I’m so excited this year!! Just love the harvesting season.

I scrambled up some eggs, got them frozen, and am dehydrating basil. Have dried a bunch of lemon balm and catnip for tea, helps for anxiety and sleeping. Have marked the valerian for digging later and am still picking chamomile and calendula for drying. That’s about all the extras I put back this last week.

Good luck with all you do. I appreciate your blog very much

Hope you get some grapes, Nina. A friend of ours has grape vines. He brings me a 5 gallon bucket each year and I make grape jelly. (His wife doesn’t care to can, although she is a fantastic cook). It works out for both of us and I return jelly to them to enjoy and have plenty for my family. I wanted to do grape juice last year but there just wasn’t enough grapes to get very much juice, wouldn’t have been any jelly, we had a strange growing year for everything here last year. Best wishes with your garden.

Thanks Vicky. I’ll let you know. Good luck with your summer season. I lived in Kentucky for 15 years. No matter what anyone says(LOL!), it’s a glorious state to live in.
