Frugal Challenge-What to buy in March

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

I am going to start posting things to buy each month things that are on sale, clearance items and ideas on how to use some of them. I will try to have this out at the first of each month so you will have an idea of what to look for.

March is “National Frozen Foods Month” Most grocery stores will have sales on certain frozen foods so now is the time to stock up if what you use is on sale. Remember though don’t buy something that is on sale if it isn’t already something you use. Look for vegetables, if you don’t have a lot of freezer space you can dehydrate.

Spring cleaning, some things go on sale for spring cleaning so now is the time to stick up on cleaning supplies, including paper towels, cloth’s, garbage bags, and protective gloves.

Other things that are usually on sale in March is Luggage. Now is the time to get luggage if you need new or if you are planning a trip and know you will need some. Also if you have kids you might think about picking it up on sale for Birthday or Christmas gifts. Another idea is to use a smaller bag for an Easter basket.

Holidays

Saint Patrick’s day. You will want to look for chocolate remember you can chop it up to use in cookies, cakes, muffins, or just eat it.
Corned beef is also on sale get an extra one or two to put in the freezer and even better if you can get them on clearance sale.
Cabbage, make freezer cole slaw, sour kraut, cabbage rolls ( freeze extra for later).
Pick up clearance sale decorations for next year.
If you can find the little black pots on clearance sale pick up a few to use for Halloween. Also if you have children look for the gold and green coins on clearance sale to use in sensory bins or just for them to use as play money.

March Madness, Snacks, cheese crackers, dips, fruit and veggie trays ( make sure these are a really good deal it may be cheaper to make your own),sandwich items ( you can freeze the lunch meats) wings (these can also be frozen to use later),chips ( you can rebag into smaller into smaller bags for lunches).

Marti Gras, Feathers and feather mask ( the mask are great fun for kids to play with), if you can find the mask on a really good clearance sale you can use the feathers for arts and crafts with the kids. String beads ( great for dress up and also if you are going to have a kids birthday party buy these on sale or clearance sale for party favors).

Produce in season, Artichokes, asparagus, avocados, broccoli, cabbages, carrots, cauliflower, celery, grapefruit, grapes, lemons, limes, mushrooms, onions, peas, radishes, rhubarb, spinach, and strawberries. If you use any of these try to buy in bulk when on sale and freeze, dehydrate, ferment, or can.

Clearance

Most stores will start putting their winter stuff on sale. So now is the time to get the winter gear for next year such as hats, insulated gloves, coats ( you can even get your children’s coat for next year just get it a size or two larger )wool socks, etc. Also if you do any winter sports or activities look for clearance sale on items that you use for these. Such as skis, snowboards, sleds, snow shovels, tubes etc.

And don’t forget the after holidays clearance sales.

Pick up clearance sale decorations for next year.
If you can find the little black pots on clearance sale pick up a few to use for Halloween. Also if you have children look for the gold and green coins on clearance sale to use in sensory bins or just for them to use as play money.

      NRP,
Thanks, I need to try and incorporate the deep pantry challenge to match the monthly sales. But pretty sure that is a little ways off but is a goal.
