Deep Pantry

Don’t forget to share what you were able to do this past week to have a deep pantry/food storage. Let’s encourage each other. And if you have a question feel free to ask or if you have the answer to a question feel free to answer. If you have a tip or idea you can share that also. As I said let’s make this a place where we can share and encourage others to get that deep pantry.

Remember having a deep pantry isn’t just about having extra food on hand. It is also about having the means to survive in an emergency situation, having all the extra food isn’t going to do you much good if you can’t cook it when the power is out.

10 pounds Pasta / Baking Soda, Baking Powder

10 Pounds of pasta, Wal-Mart has most of their Pasta for a dollar a pound. You can also make your own noodles, super easy to make, I do store some macaroni and spaghetti noodles just because they are a lot harder to make. I leave mine in the original package and put into buckets that I put in my outside shed so they can freeze during the winter.

Baking Soda/ Baking powder, as I have said before I get my baking soda at the local feed store ( IFA). It is 13.00 dollars for 50 pounds, at Wal-Mart it is 1.98 for 64 ounces. If you make your own you will need to store cream of tartar, by doing this you don’t have to worry about the baking powder going flat, and it doesn’t have the extra additives added to it.

How to make your own Baking Powder.

  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 teaspoons cream of tartar

Use right away. If you are not going to use right away add 1 teaspoon of cornstarch.

The extra item this month is to work on alternate cooking sources such as a solar oven, thermal cooker, wonder oven, rocket stove, a bbq grill or even on your wood stove. This way if the power is out you have a way to cook.

The action item this month is to learn to can, if you don’t know anyone that can teach you, there is a ton of info on the internet, and u-tube has a lot also. Start with water bath canning then move up to pressure canning. You can pick up a nice pressure canner for under 150 dollars and you can also use it to water bath can. Wal-Mart has a water bath canner for about 40 dollars.

Add a little more to your money stash. Like I say every little bit helps.

Put back some more water.

    Ok, I have a question…
The Baking Soda you get at IFA, it is the exact same as the Arm and Hammer that I have been using since the beginning of time??
Assuming you store it in a Plastic Bucket, does it pick up the Plastic Smell/Flavor at all?

I’m going to hit the Caning stuff really hard in my upcoming series, so be ready to try a few things.
Even Caning Taters as Connie does.
You need to know how to Can Meat if the power goes out, or are you going to lose all that Meat you have in those freezers? Also know how to dehydrate and Air Dry Meats.
A suggestion, get a Remote Alarm for your Freezers, I have told this story before, but, A Neighbor had a freezer, now two freezers, and lose an entire beef in the first one. The cost of the freezer, $900, the cost of losing that Beef was over $3500. PLUS other stuff he had in there. Now he’s lost a second one, old freezers I guess, but I know he had an Elk in there plus some Hams and Turkeys.

Here is the Alarm I use. They work. At a little under $18 they are CHEEP!!!

      NRP,
Yes, it is the same baking soda you have always used. It is even arm and hammer. I use it for everything, cooking, cleaning, I even use it to make alkaline water for drinking.

I need to get an alarm for my freezers. I lost a freezer full of stuff one time and it was not good I was lucky that it was my freezer for odds and ends not my meat or veggie/fruit freezer.

      Have a great day
